Ronja Rövardotter
Directed by Tage Danielsson
Synopsis
Ronia lives happily in her father's castle until she comes across a new playmate, Birk, in the nearby dark forest. The two explore the wilderness, braving dangerous Witchbirds and Rump-Gnomes. But when their families find out Birk and Ronia have been playing together, they forbid them to see each other again. Indeed, their fathers are competing robber chieftains and bitter enemies. Now the two spunky children must try to tear down the barriers that have kept their families apart for so long.

Here I thought Rare Exports would be the first and last time I'd see a horde of completely nude European men frolic around in the snow together. Who'd except I'd reunite with this trauma in a children's film of all things?
Ronja rövardotter is a Swedish tale about a young girl growing up in a clan of robbers in the Scandinavian wilds. Of course, being a book made for kids in this part of the world means it's chock full of everything necessary to give anyone nightmares. These include but are not limited to: freezing to death, starving to death, falling to your death, drowning... to death, crushed to death, lured to your death under thrall, torn apart by orca…

this movie taught me that the ideal family constellation is a mom, a dad, a daughter, twelve guys, another mom and dad and their son, plus another twelve men.

The strictly platonic sibling relationship between Ronja and Birk is the cutest shit. Like seriously, two kids so fed up with their fathers being idiots that they move out into the forest, calling each other brother and sister? Yes please. Magical creatures meeting them on their way? Hell yes. The most awesome hardcore boss mother? Yes yes yes yes. I love it.

Review by Dead Moon Night ★★★★
A classic for the whole family. It captures the joy of being a child quite perfectly and Astrid Lindgren sure knew how to put words on important things in life. Also, the scenery is stunning.

Such a childhood classic that’s actually good today as well. There are so many iconic moments and quotes in this that anyone who’s into kids’ films should experience. The middle act drags the whole thing down since it’s a little too montage reliant with barely anything happening in the story. The thing wraps up pretty nicely though.

Decided to watch a classic with my sister. This is part of our national heritage, and every novel that the great Astrid Lindgren wrote. She made books that children and adults could appreciate, and they weren't completely dumbed down or scaled back. This has casual nudity, casual swearing, fighting, death scenes and ravaging birds that literally call out for blood.
The environments are lush and beautiful, but the actors tend to really ham it up in this. This basically wins the overacting olympics, but in the best way possible, especially from Börje Ahlstedt as the amazing Mattis, Ronja's father. He screams a good 90% of his lines, no matter if he is happy, sad, angry or surprised. It's amazing to…
