Today we’ll be exploring the Live 3D suite of tools for VTubers. In the past we’ve covered VTube Studio and VSeeFace, both excellent face tracking softwares for VTubers. Live 3D, not to be confused with Live 2D Cubism (no affiliation), has a variety of applications, including VTuber Maker (a face tracking software similar to VTube Studio), PNGTuber Maker (which we’ll cover in a future article), a companion app for Twitch, and more. In this article, we’re mainly going to focus on the VTuber Maker app. You can download VTuber Maker from the Live 3D website. You can also commission VTuber models from the website, read tutorials, browse Live 3D’s different assets, and more.
VTuber Maker
VTuber Maker is the face tracking software offered by Live 3D. Despite having “maker” in the name, you don’t actually create any avatars. If you have knowledge of other face tracking software, Live 3D will be a breeze for you to use. If not, don’t fear, the software is very intuitive. We’ll explain the main features below. First, you need to download VTuber Maker.
Once your download is complete, go ahead and extract all of the files. Then, click on VTuber Maker.
Once you open the software, you’ll need to create an account. Click Sign Up to get started.
You’ll be taken to the Register page and prompted to choose a username and password. You also need to enter your email address and verify it before you can get started with the software.
Log in once you have confirmed your account. When you open the software, the main page will look like this:
Here you’ll see the default VTuber model and background as well as your webcam in the lower left corner. The red dots mean that the software is tracking your face. You can calibrate it by clicking on the camera icon on the right side of the screen.
If you want to move the avatar, left click and hold to drag it around. Use your mouse’s scroll wheel to zoom in and out.
Let’s take a look at the different icons on the right panel and how to use them.
Avatar
The first icon lets you assign an avatar. You can choose from a variety of avatars, both free and paid. Live 3D offers several different types of subscriptions. Currently, the Lite subscription model is $3.90 per month and will allow you to access more of the avatars. The Plus subscription model is $16 per month and will open access to all of the avatars. You can hover your mouse over the avatars with gold crown icons to see if they are available with Lite or Plus.
There are currently 10 free avatars to choose from, both male, female, and animal. There are even chibi versions of certain avatars.
Room
Here you can change your room background. There are several free options as well as paid. There is also a blur tool which you can scale up to 100 percent. Like with the avatars, some backgrounds require a subscription, either Lite or Plus. There are six free backgrounds available as well as green screen and plain color options. You can click the plus sign to upload your own image.
Interaction Tool (Twitch)
The Interaction Tool is an extension meant to be used in conjunction with Twitch to incentivize viewers to interact with your streams. You can download it here. It has various animations including a bonk hammer, floating sakura petals, and glowstick dancing. You can also assign hotkeys to trigger the animations at will. Based on our testing, it looks like you will need to be a Lite or Plus subscriber in order to access these animations an unlimited number of times. Bonk hammer, paw stroke, and zoom in are free, but the other animations can only be used up to ten times.
Quick Action Panel
Clicking on the Quick Panel will bring up a small window where you can click to trigger various animations. They also come with preassigned hotkeys. Hover over the icons with your mouse to see where they’re assigned.
There are also a variety of quick poses you can click on. Clicking on the More Pose option will take you to Live 3D’s Anime Pose app on Steam.
White Board
The White Board function allows you to show videos, photos, powerpoint presentations, etc. behind your model. This feature is especially useful for VTubers to use during their debut streams. You’ll need to be at least a Lite user in order to access the White Board feature.
